Critics Consensus

Maggie lurches a bit clumsily at times, but is partially redeemed by strong performances and an unexpectedly thoughtful tone.

Maggie (2015) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Angie Han Slashfilm Maggie could have been a rare treat... Instead, what we get is a genuinely new take that winds up feeling, somehow, like the same old stuff we've seen a million times before. Jun 14, 2017 Full Review Maggie (2015) | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Jason Bailey Flavorwire It's a serious, heartfelt, dramatic turn, and he totally nails it. I'm as surprised as you are. May 28, 2016 Full Review Maggie (2015) | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Jonathan Romney Observer (UK) Breslin is affecting as the ordinary young woman beneath the festering flesh, while Arnie shows a delicacy you'd never have suspected, at least not from his current TV ads with meerkats. Rated: 3/5 Jul 26, 2015 Full Review Maggie (2015) | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Jordan Brooks Vague Visages A film that deals more with heady emotional concepts than surviving a viral apocalypse, Maggie is the perfect actor’s showcase for a man long thought to have given up drama. Aug 3, 2023 Full Review Maggie (2015) | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It is such an interesting mix of subtle horror and emotional family drama. Rated: 4/5 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Maggie (2015) | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review While Schwarzenegger brings undeniable weight to his portrayal, first-time screenwriter John Scott 3 gives the actor little to do, except walk around with a constipated expression and a heavy brow. KerryWhite's S Rating: 6/10. 61/100 Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Pierre A Arnold and Abigail were phenomenal, great performances Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/24 Full Review Jonathan G Pudo ser algo diferente. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/10/24 Full Review Kate H Wonderful film Schwarzenegger demonstrating what a talented actor he is .An excellent film demonstrating the horrors of a pandemic which we have now all lived through. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/24 Full Review Alec B I will give them credit for promising a slow, bleak death march and delivering one but unfortunately that's all the film is. There's no real sense of who these characters are outside of what the film needs them to be and since we don't understand them there's no reason for us to care. Breslin almost makes it work but she's not given much to work with. As to Schwarzenegger, it's nice to see him embrace his age for once but the illusion that he's giving any kind of revelatory performance can only be sustained for so long by disguising him with a beard, flannel shirts, and a lack of one-liners. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/13/23 Full Review Me A I guess I understand where the negative reviews come from. Some people sought this movie out to see another infection-based gory film with guts and grossness. This movie is NOT that, and I am so glad...I have always sought out apocalyptic movies with heart and humanity..I love the movies where the infected get better, where there is hope, where there is a bit of humanity even in the mayhem of an apocalypse. This movie is a movie about learning to let go, even when the illness is terrifyingly real. It's a girl with a terminal illness and a dad who must come to terms with losing every human trace of his little girl. I love that the focus is not fighting hordes of infected. It's slow and it's a true drama that really fleshes out the characters. If you are looking for a cheap thrill with multiple kills and horror-movie zombie make-up in your face every three minutes, this is not the one for you. If you are looking for a tear jerking, cerebral flick about loss with a few scares, this is the one for you. Unique but very compelling.
