An original ink drawing of the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt by Mucha, signed by the artist. Bernhardt was the single most influential figure in Mucha's life; his poster for her play, Gismonda, made him famous; and, due to his own fashioning of her within Byzantine arcs and halos, her own sobriquet as "the divine Sarah" was burnished.

Sarah Bernhardt's profile portrait has been painted by many artists, painters and photographers alike. Among these, two well-known pastels by Walter Spindler offer similarities to our painting. We can easily assume that this one was made for Sarah Bernhardt herself, Spindler having taken care to make it a timeless object, taking up the codes of the medal profile and the gold background, two characteristics peculiar to the Italian primitives. Like an icon, the head of the famous actress, who influenced and bewitched many of her contemporaries, stands out and imposes itself, without any decor or costume to disguise it. Stripped of all artifice, the mere representation of her profile is enough to convey her fascinating presence.

Although Mucha unfortunately did not leave us with any notes about this drawing, the flowing hair and loosely wrapped garment seen here closely resemble the style of Sarah Bernhardt in La Samaritaine. In the final poster, Mucha showed Bernhardt facing us with her cloak draped behind her. It’s a lovely little look into the artist’s creative process.
