Best sun protection for surfing: Top sun blocks and sunscreens tested (2)

If your summer plans include sun, sea and surf then a sunblock or sunscreen which will allow you to spend maximum time in the water or riding waves is going to be top of your packing list. Daily SPF is a non-negotiable to protect skin from harmful rays, but when it comes to water sports there are a few more factors to bear in mind to choose the best protection.

Firstly, as Anjali Mahto, Consultant Dermatologist at Self London explains, “When selecting a sunscreen for extended water sports, ensure it is labelled as ‘water-resistant’ or ‘very water-resistant,’ offering protection for 60 to 80 minutes in water,” otherwise you’re not guaranteed to be protected while you swim or surf.

“Using a specific sunscreen for time in the water is crucial because standard sunscreens can quickly wash off, leaving your skin unprotected against harmful UV rays. Water-resistant formulations are designed to adhere better to the skin, providing consistent protection during prolonged exposure to water,” she adds. They also won’t wash off if you sweat, reducing the risk of skin cancer, and avoiding premature skin ageing caused by UVA and UVB rays.

In terms of what protection you need, Mahto adds, “Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen to shield against both UVA and UVB rays, with a minimum SPF of 30.”

People often talk about mineral and ‘chemical’ sunscreens, with the difference being that physical filters in mineral versions work by sort of reflecting away UV light while sitting on the skin. ‘Chemical’ sunscreens absorb UV light and sink easily into the skin. Mineral or physical sunscreens are sometimes referred to as sunblock.

Mahto explains that physical sunscreens - which contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide - will “tend to be more stable in water. Look for formulations designed for sports, which often resist sweat and have a non-greasy texture.“

Another factor to consider for anyone going in the ocean wearing sunscreen or sunblock is the fact that chemical versions may contain filters which are considered to be harmful to marine life, while some mineral ingredients have also been found to affect coral. The jury is still out on this, though studies including one cited by the National Ocean Service found Oxybenzone, or BP-3, to be highly toxic to juvenile corals and other marine life. While aCoral Reef Alliancereport highlights other potentially harmful sunscreen ingredients including Octinoxate, Benzophenone-1, Benzophenone-8, OD-PABA, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, and 3-benzylidene camphor.

A ‘reef-safe’ stamp should indicate if your cream or spray is a conscious choice, though it is an unregulated term, so look closely at the ingredients for your own piece of mind if you want to protect the ocean while you protect yourself.

And of course, a non-negotiable is reapplication, pay attention to the water-resistant time on your chosen formula and be sure to, “Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or towel drying, regardless of the SPF rating,” says Mahto. Now, you know the non-negotiables here’s the best sunblock and sunscreen for surfing for every type of skin and area that needs that all-important protection in the water.
