Representation matters. “You can’t be what you can’t see.” - Marian Wright EdelmanGrowing up I had a parachuting action man (I still do, he’s called Brian and sits on my shelf 😉) Girls toys were pink, sparkly and all about fashion, families and dressing up. I went to an all girls school in the 90s and there was no career guidance available for the “non traditional” roles I was interested in - joining the RAF, being an airline pilot, so at 16 I set out to find the information myself. (This is mid 90s pre fast and easy internet search!)It’s only these past few years where I have looked back at my flying career and told my career change story, that I have truly realised and appreciated how far we have come. Being one of only approximately 500 female airline captains in the world when I took my command over a decade ago, to now with a pre-Covid statistic of approximately 1500.I have always felt those forging a path less travelled have a duty to show the possibilities and signpost the way for others, sharing knowledge and experience to help future generations achieve and grow from the foundations laid. The first time I saw the airshow I was very tiny, I remember being short and trying to see more of it. I also remember very quickly coming to the conclusion that there must be some selection process that separates individuals who are allowed to fly fighter jets from the ones who drive cabs, because the Kaali peeli drivers kept spitting pan, swearing at each other and definitely could not stick to a lane. Now compare that with synchronization and the air show. Later that evening one of mom's friends whose husband was in the defence humored my hunger for information by explaining the concept of armed forces, the army, navy, airforce, what the job of a field marshal is, what a defence budget is. How delicate true freedom is and how teamwork is the key. As time went by I have witnessed lesser degrees of teamwork, complete discord and even counter productive work. Many instances made me ask "Yaar isko hire kisne Kiya? ... or Yeh iss company mein kya kar raha Hai?.." which translates in to .. who hired this person for this job or what is this person doing here. And every single time there was a misfit, there was also a story of a compromised selection process. Today as a parent I was explaining to my daughter why only a handful of people from 140 crore population get to fly in the SKAT team. She started understanding the difference between commercial pilots and defence pilots. She understood why the SKAT team has superstars different from the entertainment superstars. Popular vs effective or efficient is a very fluid concept. When we click photographs or brainstorm for concepts we adopt stringent rejection. Selection is nature's way to keep species alive. Teamwork has a hidden condition of getting the right team first. The selection makes the teamwork and that decides which team wins. Editing an approach that doesn't offer you what you crave is what makes the team stay. Selection is supreme and saying 'No' to what dilutes is the only yardstick. Entrepreneurship allows you to say No to archaic hierarchies and irrelevant value systems. It allows you to say yes to higher control and sharper results. Selection of every tiny spec and grain of rice defines a food shot. Selection of a model defines a fashion shot. We exercise selection everyday. Let the air show remind us why only 7 out of 140 crore Indians are flying those Surya Kirans. Let us applaud them and thank our stars that the selection process of the Defence forces prevail. Systems are built by many good minds and they are the format our future will debunk, but values are held up by a few strong minds and that is the only seed we leave behind. Provoke to fly. Higher, Better, Aligned.
